Today at the monthly LA Comic Book and Science Fiction Convention there was a panel with Stan Lee (comic (co-)creator legend) and John Ramita Jr. about Sam Raimi's "Spider-Man". They screened all of the trailers for the upcoming movie and held a short question and answer session with the two guys about the movie and the history of the comic. The following is an abbreviated transcript of that Q&A taken from a crummy recording. Most quotes are exact but some of the sound was garbled and quotes I'm unsure about are italicized, but all modifications were kept to a minimum for your reading pleasure. (^_^)

Below the transcribed Q&A you will find two transcribed flyers found at the con...

stan lee and john ramita jr.Q: In the movie, why does the Green Goblin wear armor instead of the traditional costume?

A: [JRjr.] You'd have to ask Sam Raimi.

Q: You have no idea why he changed it?
A: [JRjr.] No.

[SL] He told me personally, he really hated the way it looked when he first saw it. I'm just kidding.

Q: [How much control did you have over the movie?]

A: I don't think Sam Raimi needs me to tell him how to direct a movie. These actors are great and the producer Laura Ziskin is one of the best in Hollywood. I'm just like you guys. I mean, I see it, I love it, I can't wait to see the whole thing. I saw a rough cut and it was sensational!

Q: It looks like Hollywood is finally taking Spider-Man seriously, and it's going to give the Batman series a run for its money!

A: You know my biggest regret? Bob Kane, the creator of Batman, was a close friend of mine, we were always arguing about which character was better. He would always say "Stan, there's no argument we've had three movies, and look at you!" If only he were here now!

Q: Do you make a cameo in the movie?

A: Oh well, it's a tragic story. I'll tell it fast. I had a cameo and it was really terrific. I was selling sunglasses in Time Square and Peter Parker walks by and I hold out a pair and I say "Hey, would you like a pair of these? They're the same kind they wore in the X-Men!" But the movie ran too long and they had to cut it. But you can all see it on the DVD!

Also [] I got a bunch of little goodies as door prizes at the convention and I'm thinking of passing them along to you! -- It's time for another FS list contest!:

Super-Sam
Sam Raimi's no stranger to comic books. Apart from directing the most anticipated movie of the summer Spider-Man, he's had two of his own movies (Darkman, Army of Darkness) translated into comic book form. So is he really at home in the comic book world? Find out when you design a comic book staring cult-favorite, director Sam Raimi! Use original drawings, computer graphics, cut and pasted magazine clippings or whatever else you can come up with to put together a Sam Raimi comic! Be as ambitious or as lazy as you choose. I suggest just trying to put together a comic book cover featuring Sam, a title, some snappy dialogue and a brief description of the action detailed "inside" your comic. Another idea might be to do something like a Sunday morning comic strip. Or a single comic frame. It is completely up to you!

Grand Prize: A Spider-Man one sheet poster (like this: http://fakeshemps.com/spidermanposter.jpg )

Runner-Up: Two official Spider-Man baseball caps (one reading "Daily Bugle" and one reading "Oscorp" with Spider-Man written on the side)

Third & Fourth Place: Daily Bugle notepad, Daily Bugle press pass, and two hologram discs.

The winning comic would be decided based on both list member votes and list judges and would be posted on the FSFS (www.fakeshemps.com). Tentative date of contest close: 5/3/02. More details to be announced.
New! Contest extended due to lack of entries! No new closing date announced.
