Xena16WP: Scott, what was it like to work on Evil Dead 2? MATTQUALAR: I had a blast. Total creative freedom. Sam Raimi is just the greatest... UULLAA: I got a jonathon ross program on tape about sam where INTRUDER is called NIGHTCREW MATTQUALAR: That was my original title "NIGHTCREW". THEY WERE ALSO GOING TO CALL IT "NERVENDINGS". UULLAA: i like NIGHTCREW best MATTQUALAR: Me too. MATTQUALAR: Actually they were gonna call it "NIGHTCREW the final checkout". UULLAA: Over here in the UK it was released 2 times one said new version, none was uncut UULLAA: i have them both do you know why there was 2 versions MATTQUALAR: The gore factor. Shempy7: Really? Is there that much of a difference? MATTQUALAR: You bet. APLitSmart: You must have gone through an ocean of fake blood MATTQUALAR: Yes... lots-o-blood. UULLAA: I've seen the uncut version and that was very different MATTQUALAR: You tell 'em, UULLAA. RENPIC Fan: Do you think the rating standards have changed a lot on movies in the last 20 years? MATTQUALAR: Oh yeah. Just look at the 1st "Friday the 13th" flick... MATTQUALAR: ...then look at the last one they made. Quite a difference. UULLAA: If there is an EVIL DEAD 4 please get with sam and write it again. MATTQUALAR: Evil Dead 4? Starring Kevin Costner... APLitSmart: Would you return to your roots, i.e. the Evil Dead? MATTQUALAR: It would be cool but the way the system's set up now, where would you play your film? MATTQUALAR: If in fact it is NC 17? Xena16WP: My friend wants to know in Intruder, whose hand was in the lobster tank? MATTQUALAR: That was Sam's hand. MATTQUALAR: Gotta hand it to him... Jan Holbrk: i hear Sam resurrected his car for Simple Plan and For Love of the Game MATTQUALAR: I wouldn't be a bit surprised. MATTQUALAR: The classic, as he calls it. UULLAA: I've seen a version of the saw scene in intruder which was longer MATTQUALAR: There was a longer band saw scene in "INTRUDER"< maybe you saw a bootleg version. MATTQUALAR: Sam and Bruce went to war over that car on "CRIMEWAVE" and "EVIL DEAD 2". Shempy7: And who won? MATTQUALAR: Sam. He's still putting it in movies. APLitSmart: Scott, what is your next project, if I may ask? MATTQUALAR: I've got a couple of offers... but can't say too much just yet. Jan Holbrk: I'll bet it was exciting for you to have sold "The Rookie" to Eastwood. That was a really good flick. Did they change the script much from the original? MATTQUALAR: Not too much. Clint shot it in a much darker way, visually. Xena16WP: What's it like to work for the movie industry? The reason I ask is because I am interested in that field. What advice can you offer? MATTQUALAR: It's pretty crazy. You give up whatever normal life you have... MATTQUALAR: If you wanna get into the business be prepared to put up with a lot of crap.... MATTQUALAR: It never goes the way you think it should... UULLAA: One film i want made so bad is a WAR OF THE WORLDS proper version UULLAA: So scott don't pass it up if you get the chance please MATTQUALAR: They remade WOW. It was called INDEPENDENCE DAY. Scarygrrl1: i read on imdb that you were in something called nude bowling party, is that true? MATTQUALAR: Nude Bowling Party. I played a photographer. What a cheese fest. Nice looking women though.. {Asked whether or not Sam and Scott had a remake in mind, for Evil Dead 2} MATTQUALAR: No remake. But the budget demanded that we keep it in the cabin again. Xena16WP: What chances do you think I would have as a woman director? MATTQUALAR: You would have an excellent chance of directing... MATTQUALAR: Gender don't much matter today. Ida Lupina was directing in the late 40's. Shempy7: Did you write a lot when you were in high school, Scott? MATTQUALAR: Yeah. I wrote alot in high school. UULLAA: Would i be right in saying EVIL DEAD was released in the UK by palace pictures first. MATTQUALAR: Yes. Palace Pix released it first. Scarygrrl1: we're 15 and we wanna start making films..do you have any tips? MATTQUALAR: Get out the Camcorder and start making flicks. Even you you remake something just do it. UULLAA: Any plans to come over to the UK for a signing ,film fair or something MATTQUALAR: I hope. It's been almost 10 years since I was there for the Splatter fest at the Scala. LovinGTate: Scott? Did you have fun working in The Quick and the Dead? MATTQUALAR: The Quick & the Dead was a blast. Hung out w/Russel Crowe alot. Gene Hackman was cool. MATTQUALAR: The 2nd, 2nd AD kept asking me for jokes. I'd tell him and then I see him telling Sharon S.. MATTQUALAR: Sharon Stone and she's LOL. Then I find out he's dating her... MATTQUALAR: So I was able to get a few jokes in myself. She laughed but then it was back to LA LA for me. Wish I had a bigger role in the film. Shempy7: When you write, do you write outlines or short stories first, or do you just script it? MATTQUALAR: Outlines. They're the way to go. Like a bare X mas tree/then ya can hang the ornaments. Shempy7: Have you ever started stories and not finished them? MATTQUALAR: All the time. Just keep them handy for later. Never know when you might use some of the ideas again. Xena16WP: What would you suggest to look for in a college for someone interested in the field? Xena16WP: Any that you could recommend? MATTQUALAR: College? Someplace out here in LA. MATTQUALAR: We all went to film school in our backyards in Michigan. MATTQUALAR: So it's a little difficult to pinpoint a college. MATTQUALAR: The main thing is to get your butts out here. MATTQUALAR: Quentin Tarantino live in the SOUTH BAY, about an hour from Hollywood and he said he may as well have been in South Africa. MATTQUALAR: There are so many connections to make here... you also have to have the ammo in order to play the game. MATTQUALAR: USC sounds good. UULLAA: MATT having just done a vampire movie what did you think of VAMPIRES i was disappointed MATTQUALAR: VAMPIRES had some cool stuff in it. I think the script need one or two more rewrites... Shempy7: Have you always worked in the film industry? At least since The Evil Dead? MATTQUALAR: I worked in a grocery store/Walnut Lake Market. I got Bruce a job there.. Shempy7: Oh! That's where Intruder came from, eh? MATTQUALAR: INTRUDER. yup. Xena16WP: What do you think is the most rewarding aspect of film making? What is the worst? MATTQUALAR: Seeing/hearing the audience react. The worst? Trying to get what you want to make made. Shempy7: Um... do you do scary things to people in real life? Like, did you prank people at the store MATTQUALAR: All the time. Sam/Bruce and me would put on a Tor Johnson mask/dress up like an old man and pretend to have heart attacks. We'd film the peoples reactions like "Candid Camera". APLitSmart: {About Tor Johnson} Plan 9 From Outer Space! MATTQUALAR: Plan 9 is right. Shempy7: Oh my! Did you ever get in trouble? Or did people just laugh at you? MATTQUALAR: Yeah. But the people mostly chased us away. It was a more innocent time... MATTQUALAR: People would applaud sometimes... KDRector: I heard that store's where you got a lot of the pies y'all used in your short flicks. MATTQUALAR: Yeah. All the old leftover/out of date stock. Came in handy. Shempy7: You guys must have been a lot of fun to have in the neighborhood. MATTQUALAR: Unless we wanted to film at your house... MATTQUALAR: Hey Xena, find some other people with the exact same interests as you/film wise... MATTQUALAR: That's what Bruce/Sam and me did... Shempy7: Who do you think had the most supportive parents of you group of boys? MATTQUALAR: We all did. Very rare indeed. Lana Gail: And all the cold and grey and snowy Michigan weather didn't affect any of this? MATTQUALAR: I guess not. MATTQUALAR: We shot no matter the weather. UULLAA: What happened to the guy with half a head in evil 2 we saw loads of pix MATTQUALAR: It bit the editing room floor. Wish a cut of that existed. UULLAA: I think i saw more stills of that scene than any other before it came out MATTQUALAR: Which scene? UULLAA: half a head MATTQUALAR: Oh yeah. Yesterday, I wasn't half the man I used to be... Scarygrrl1: I read that you all filmed part of THou shalt not kill..except on Bruce's parents front lawn MATTQUALAR: In Bruce's garage. It was his house. Jan Holbrk: And you wrecked his lawn... MATTQUALAR: Ruined Bruce's lawn? Jan Holbrk: by emptying the garage and piling it on the lawn and covering it with a tarp MATTQUALAR: Oh that... Jan Holbrk: he's still mumbling about it. LOL MATTQUALAR: Can we shoot a movie on your lawn? UULLAA: What are your views on army of darkness MATTQUALAR: Army of Darkness is a cool fantasy flick. Like 7th Voyage of Sinbad... Xena16WP: I read about an alternate ending to Army Of Darkness. Which you you prefer? MATTQUALAR: The alternate ending. Had more atmosphere/was way cooler... Shempy7: Have you ever filmed something you later regretted? I heard Sam regretted having Shempy7: done the tree-rape scene long ago... MATTQUALAR: Wish I had the time to write AOD w?Sam... MATTQUALAR: No, not really.... BREEE444: In retrospect, do you think there was anything you could have done to help ensure what you wanted to make, actually got made, as far as The Nutty Nut/Nutthouse was concerned? MATTQUALAR: Oh that. MATTQUALAR: Well, you go to bed with dogs you wake up with fleas as the saying goes... APLitSmart: so, how itchy did you get? MATTQUALAR: At least I got to take my name off the miserable thing... Shempy7: That's farther than Sam got with Crimewave... MATTQUALAR: How true. MATTQUALAR: Crimewave's got some really cool s**t in it. Xena16WP: What was it like to work with Sam and Bruce? MATTQUALAR: So much fun I can't tell you... MATTQUALAR: ...the idea of working with your friends and having it be so cool/fun/etc. MATTQUALAR: Can't wait to do it again... Not yet... {After a complaint by a gentleman having to make "bloody cables" for a living} Shempy7: bloody cables... reminds me of an elevator scene I saw recently... RENPIC Fan: Hahaha - bats chewing through bloody cables, by chance? MATTQUALAR: The one w/the Bruce Campbell elevator in it? Shempy7: Yup, that one. Shempy7: That was the only thing I really didn't get in that movie MATTQUALAR: That it was a fake out? Shempy7: Why in the heck would the bats chew threw the cable? MATTQUALAR: Malicious little devils. KDRector: What made you decide to do the daytime scenes in Tx with such a heavy sepia haze to 'em? MATTQUALAR: Because South Africa was Shemping for Texas/Mexico. RENPIC Fan: Have you filmed in other countries? MATTQUALAR: Not yet. UULLAA: Scott has intruder ever been released uncut officially MATTQUALAR: Yes it has/by accident. In 1989 Colorbox in the UK mistakenly released the uncut version... MATTQUALAR: Charlie band at Full Moon is considering doing an uncut version... MATTQUALAR: Then Colorbox pulled the uncut version and replaced it w/the cut version... UULLAA: I've got both one that says new version on it MATTQUALAR: I haven't even got one like that... UULLAA: the one that don't say that on it has slightly more gore but not all of it MATTQUALAR: I'm soooo confused... UULLAA: me too MATTQUALAR: Me three... MATTQUALAR: Evil Dead 2. The Nutty Nut script. Xena16WP: Do you prefer team effort or working independently? MATTQUALAR: In writing I like working with someone else. Gives you another perspective. MATTQUALAR: With comedy especially. Shempy7: Who worked on the Nutty Nut? MATTQUALAR: Sam, Bruce and Ron Zwang. MATTQUALAR: And me. Shempy7: Did you all change your names? MATTQUALAR: For the movie, yes. Shempy7: Which one was Peter Perkinson? MATTQUALAR: Bruce Campbell. MATTQUALAR: That movie was so bad it went direct to audio. APLitSmart: Is there any movie with which you wish you had been associated? MATTQUALAR: Hum? Interesting question... don't quite know... MATTQUALAR: Yes. Citizen Kane, Gone with the Wind... Xena16WP: Which of your movies is your favorite? Least favorite? MATTQUALAR: That's a toughie... MATTQUALAR: Least favorite is "The Nutty Nut"/"The Nutt House". UULLAA: Have you seen hangmans daughter MATTQUALAR: Yes. I saw "Hangman". MATTQUALAR: "Hangman's" seems to be more of an eerie Western... APLitSmart: Are westerns making a comeback? MATTQUALAR: If one makes money it will. UULLAA: which would you say was closest to the original blood or hangmans MATTQUALAR: Blood. That's why they released it first. Shempy7: I really enjoyed TBM.
